In tandem with his legal practice, IP attorney Chuck DeVoe, often shifts gears to cycle. Chuck is an avid outdoorsman with a passion for adventure cycling, such as bicycling across the country from Seattle to Washington, D.C. on a tandem with his wife, Jennifer.
More recently, Chuck has put his tandem experience to good use, by taking his friend George Thompson on adventure rides, aboard tandems George calls “Our Lady of Fatima” or “Empire Builder.” At first sight, the two appear like any other tandem cyclists, but George is completely blind. Many who meet the pair are astonished, often quipping “How can he ride if he is blind?” George just smiles, and says, “You would be amazed at the places we have seen together.” George’s favorite rides are on “Our Lady” are to see Portland’s Forest Park, or on “Empire Builder” to see the Polar Express steam train that runs in winter along Portland’s Springwater Corridor. Chuck tries to find anything for George to sense, such as the smells of a muddy road, the clangs of a chugging engine, lilacs blooming in the Columbia Gorge, or strong winds on a winding road.
